A WATERCOLOUR view of Berwick painted by a famous Tyneside artist on a day excursion to the town by coastal steamer more than a century ago is to go under the hammer in Newcastle and is expected to fetch hundreds of pounds.
The view from the castle walls on the west of the town showing Berwick's old bridge and the river mouth beyond was painted by Newcastle-born Robert Jobling (1841-1923) in about 1910 and is one of the dozens of coastal views the artist completed in a
career spanning some 60 years.
Said John Anderson, picture specialist at city auctioneers Anderson & Garland: "Jobling's work is among the most eagerly sought after in our regular fine art sales here in Newcastle, and his views of specific locations are particularly popular.
"This one of Berwick, however, is not just his only one on record but taken from such an unusual viewpoint that we were initially a little reluctant to accept that it must be of the town!"
The firm's three-day fine art and antiques sale in which the Jobling view has been included will run from September 2-4 and the pictures will go on view to the public along with the hundreds of other items on offer, on Thursday and Friday August 28 and 29; Saturday morning, August 30, and Monday, September 1.
