THE Battle of Pots and Pans, a play specially commissioned to tell the story of the Battle of Prestonpans, is visiting venues across East Lothian and Berwickshire this month before heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to form a key element of this year's battle anniversary celebrations in September.
Written, directed and narrated by well-known actor and playwright Andrew Dallmeyer, the play features local folk group the Laverock Singers and the Prestoungrange Players.
The Battle Trust commissioned the play to help teach audiences about the
battle in an approachable and enjoyable way. They also hope that is will promote their campaign to have the site of the battle protected and suitably interpreted. Ultimately they aim to build a state-of-the arts visitor centre which experts say could attract over 70,000 visitors and provided a boost to the local economy.
The play opens with two actors discussing the day's Old Firm match as they wait for the director and fellow performers to arrive to rehearse the production they are staging – a pageant in honour of the Battle of Prestonpans. As it unfolds, the play provides humour and poignancy as it explores the parallels between modern sectarianism and the divided loyalties and prejudices which abounded in the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The performance schedule is: Cockburnspath Kirk 7.30pm on Monday, May 12; Musselburgh, St Ninians 8pm on Tuesday, May 13; Belhaven and Dunbar 8pm Wednesday, May 14;
Leith, Out of the Blue Arts Centre, Iona Street 8pm Thursday, May 15; Prestonpans, Prestongrange Church 8pm on Friday, May 16; Haddington West Church at 8pm on Saturday, May 17.
Admission is free to all the May performances, although there will be opportunities to make a donation to the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust campaign.
