Whiteadder Burns Supper 2013.

Whiteadder Burns Supper 2013.

an engraved crystal glass was presented last week to John Gardiner, chairman of Whiteadder Burns Club, to mark his silver jubilee as secretary and treasurer.

Members had contributed to the gift, handed over by long serving Wattie Robertson, who was appointed chairman for next year. Mr Drew Turnbull, president, paid tribute to John for his tremendous service.

The supper, in Robin’s Nest, Chirnside, was attended by 80 and was hailed as a great success. Guests were welcomed by Mr Gardiner and the Selkirk Grace was sung by The Podlies. The Haggis was piped in by Pipe Major Andrew Ainslie and was addressed by Willie Miller.

The Immortal Memory was given by Seymour Haugh whose address was warmly applauded.

It was a great occasion for him as his late father Dick was chairman of the club in 1982. Mr Haugh said Burns was a lowly ploughman who stood up for the people of his country. Through his wonderful words he had helped to preserve the Lowland Scottish dialect and left a legacy of Scots songs.

The Toast to the club was proposed by Gary Smith and Stuart Robertson provided a sparkling tribute to ‘The Lassies’. Wattie Robertson gave the toast to the chairman.

Rob Cockburn recited ‘Tam O’Shanter’, while adding to the entertainment were Willie Miller, Peter Walker, Tom Nisbet, Grant Lees and Alistair Lindsay.

Musical director was Jim Tarvit assisted by The Podlies and accompanist was Bob Liddle.
