ONE in ten private houses in Berwick borough are unfit for habitation or in a state of poor repair, according to an independent survey which will form the basis of a new council strategy.

An estimated 287 properties, mostly built before 1919, are in such a poor condition that they would fail nationally agreed standards for health and safety, while a further 900 are considered in a state of bad repair, needing upgrade costing at least £3,000 .

BERWICK Borough Council will make strong representations to ensure there is no reduction of the town’s hospital services when the new Wansbeck General Hospital opens in three or four years’ time.

Although there are no plans at the moment to take away services from Berwick Infirmary, councillors felt a concentration of medical care in the south of the county could eventually leave local people with a trip of 50 miles even for minor surgery.

50 years ago

A TREMENDOUS effort is being made to get Shielfield Park playable in time for Saturday’s eagerly awaited Scottish Cup match against St Mirren.

Coke braziers, salt and sand are being used and at the moment the prospects look fair. Berwick’s unemployment figure has leaped to 570 - the highest for 16 years.

Bad weather, which has hit all the outside work, is largely responsible for the huge increase, to 7.3%.

100 years ago

ON the occasion of his retirement, Mr Samuel Dickson, shopwalker with Messrs Redpath and Son, drapers, High Street, Berwick, has been the recipient of a token of esteem from the staff.

Mr Dickson,73 years of age, has been connected with the drapery trade for nearly 60 years.

Indeed, and most remarkably, he has spent the whole of that period, with the exception of twelve months, in one shop.
