At an extraordinary meeting held behind closed doors, shareholders of John Swan & Sons, livestock auctioneers, voted to buy Wooler mart for £1.4m.

The decision, by 93 to 19 on a show of hands at the meeting in Carfraemill, was even more overwhelming than the votes lodged in writing which were 380,000 for the purchase and 142,000 against. It showed that shareholders had confidence in the long-term future of livestock auctioneering.

The demolition of St Andrews Church, Berwick, is scheduled to start on Monday which is, ironically, St Andrew’s Day.

The structural condition of the building, in Greenside Avenue, has been giving concern for some time.

Work is forging ahead on the £340,000 development and refurbishment of the Old Chandlery on Berwick Quayside. Craft workshops, a restaurant and offices are planned for the site. It is to be completed within a year.

Plans for a new £10,000 winery on Holy Island have been approved and passed.

By the end of next year, the number of local people employed by the Lindisfarne Mead Company, the owners, will be trebled.

The new premises will occupy 5,000 square feet plus office accommodation and a showroom for visitors. Three fully automatic production lines will extract Lindisfarne Liqueur, Lindisfarne Mead and Lindisfarne Liqueur Honey.

From the remarks let fall by Sir Francis Blake, chairman of the Northumberland education committee, at the annual speech day of Berwick High School for Girls, held in the Corn Exchange, there is every prospect of a new school being built in Berwick at no distant date.

While the cost may trouble the ratepayers, there is no doubt a new school would supply a much felt want, and no-one would regret the disappearance of the tin shed in the Magdalene Fields.
