Berwick’s main shopping thoroughfare of Marygate is to be partly pedestrianised in a £400,000 scheme due to take place next year.

The pavement on the market-stalls side of the street the street is set to be extended, and the short-stay parking bays removed, but the two-way traffic will remain in place.

The High Sheriff of Northumberland visited Bamburgh last week to look at the Grace Darling Memorial Museum and to hear about progress in the restoration in the Grace Darling Memorial in the churchyard of St Aidan’s Church.

IT could be over 40 years before traffic volume dictates that there will be a need for dual carriageway on the A1 road north of Alnwick to the Scottish Border.

Northumberland County Highways Committee stressed their long term objective remains the same as laid down in the Structure Plan, and that is to secure the upgrading of both the A1 and A69 to provide continuous dual carriageway routes within Northumberland.

Councillor Anthony Castle told Monday’s meeting that they should press the Department of Transport on every possible occasion to have the whole A1 as dual carriageway.

A fantastic run of fish has seen tens of thousands of salmon and sea trout heading up river during the weekend.

The sunshine, and mild temperatures have encouraged the fish in from the sea and they have been swimming up the River Tweed in shoals.

Crowds have been watching the fish from the Old Bridge, and on Sunday morning they saw hundreds of salmon making their way up in shallow water.

At Kelso, an onlooker said the river was ‘almost choked’ with fish - including a number of very heavy salmon and trout.

But the net fishermen could do nothing - their season ended a month ago.

When the disastrous fire took place last year at Haggerston Castle, the only available place to store the books, pictures, and other valuables was in the Chapel, which is a detached building, and it has been impossible to remove the things till lately. But on Sunday last the Chapel was reopened for service, and the appreciation of the people was shown in having a crowded congregation.

The Inspecting Commander of Coastguards handed over the Board of Trade’s long service medal at Beadnell to 13 local fishermen for their service in connection with the life saving apparatus.
