A Special release of water from a reservoir on the upper stretches of the Tweed was being carried out this week in a bid to rescue hundreds of stranded salmon.

Anglers and farmers around the Norham and Ladykirk section of the river this week reported seeing huge numbers of fish under the bridge, leaping in a vain attempt to make their annual journey upstream. Although there are problems every autumn, this year’s severe lack of rainfall has meant particularly low water levels, and SEPA had asked Scottish Water for a special release from the Megget reservoir and St Mary’s Loch in the upper reaches of the river.

The Maltings Centre should be open in Berwick by the Christmas season of 1989. Work is likely to start in March next year and provided there are no unexpected hold-ups the building will be operational just two years from now. The forecast was given by architect Mr Colin Ross at a social evening to launch the Friends of the Maltings on Saturday.

Mr Ross said it was not an easy site to develop and they had to work to a tight budget, but with a theatre capable of seating 340 and other features he was sure it would work. The major problem was to fit the building into the Berwick scene: internally it would be memorable.

Jim Clark, the farmer from Edington Mains, Chirnside, will be world champion if he wins the South African Grand Prix in December. Clark, who is having a magnificent season, kept his hopes alive by winning the American Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, New York, on Sunday.

Any proposal to close the railway leading from Tweedmouth to the Tweed Dock will be opposed by the Berwick Industrial Development Committee, it was decided at a meeting on Monday. Members expressed concern at any threat to the railway, and felt that the present line was a service that must be maintained.
