MORE than 200 walkers took part in the fifth Holy Island fundraising walk in aid of a national charity dedicated to research into blood cancers.

Just over £2,000 was raised on the day and organiser Helen Tait, who runs the north Northumberland fundraising group for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, hopes to announce a total amount soon.

The annual Forget Me Not event, which started in 2008, has raised approximately £5,000 in recent years, all of it going to the North East Centre for Cancer Research in Newcastle.

Helen said: “I’m delighted with the turnout once again. We had 220 walkers, some coming from as far as north Yorkshire, Cumbria, the Borders and Edinburgh.

“It was particularly pleasing to see so many members of staff from the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle in attendance.

“I’d like to thank Elliot Hill of Berwick Youth Project for coordinating the marshals and Northumbria Water for sponsoring the event and providing free bottled water for participants.”

Participants were asked to pay £7.50 for adults, £5 for children and £20 for a family of four. Many walkers also took up the opportunity to buy and wear a red charity T-shirt for £2.50.

Helen added: “The weather certainly helped. It was a beautiful, sunny autumn day on Holy Island and many walkers turned up on the day to register.”

Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research’s work is focused on finding causes, improving diagnosis and treatments, and running groundbreaking clinical trials for all blood cancer patients.
