There was a further blow to the region’s beleaguered transport infrastructure last week when the Strategic Rail Authority announced that improvements to the East Coast Main Line are to be put back due to a lack of funds.

In a review of the current integrated transport plan, the proposed £3-4bn upgrade of the line has been reduced to less than £1bn, most of which will be spent in the south. Plans to increase train frequency in rural areas have also been put on hold.

Berwick’s water undertaking has lost money in the last three years.

The Ministry view is that however efficient small undertakings are, they can not meet modern demands.

The annual meeting of Berwick Benefit Building Society was held in the Long Room of the Corn Exchange.

Inspector, Mr A L Miller, said it had been a very satisfactory year for the society.

“I think there are indications the real property market is clearing and the prospects are looking brighter,” he said. “All building societies feel the same. The wave may be a little longer in coming to Berwick but it will come in good time.”
