Homeless man makes plea for council help
Berwick man John Purvis is having to stay at The Granary hostel as he has been made homeless.
BERWICK man John Purvis has made an appeal for more council help in finding a new home.
The 27-year-old was asked to leave his previous address at Church Road in Tweedmouth on December 29.
After a short period staying with friends, he had been forced to fork out £25 a night for accommodation in the Granary youth hostel - a solution he says he can no longer afford.
“I’m putting all my wages into B&B accommodation at the Granary and it can’t go on any longer,” said John, who works at Foulis chip shop in Tweedmouth.
“I’ve already spent well over £100 and I haven’t got any more money,” he explained.
He has been trying to find new accommodation through the Homefinder system but is not deemed a high priority.
“It’s beyond a joke how little help I’m getting from Northumberland County Council,” he complained. “I’ve tried several times to fix up meetings with the homelessness manager but that’s not happened. Apparently I’m not a top priority.
“The whole situation is getting me down. I’m depressed and it’s on the verge of costing me everything. It’s getting desperate and I’m having no luck through Homefinder.”
A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said: “We are unable to comment on the specific details of an individual case.
“However social housing in the Berwick area is limited and the applicant’s needs will be assessed against others who are in the same or a higher band and bidding for similar properties.”
“We would be happy to reassess Mr Purvis’s situation if his circumstances have changed since our initial interview with him in January.”
