Berwick author earns PhD in Scottish Literature
CHAMPAGNE corks have been popping for Berwick author Dr Tom Christie after he graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy in Scottish Literature at a ceremony chaired by the Chancellor of Stirling University, James Naughtie.
A former member of the Rotary Club of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Tom, 33, has recently returned to the town after successfully completing a five year PhD degree at the University of Stirling.
Under the tutelage of Professor Roderick B. Watson, the celebrated Scottish poet and author of ‘The Literature of Scotland’, he compiled a dissertation entitled ‘Notional Identities’ which explored the ideological themes of various genres of Scottish popular fiction from the 1970s until the present day.
In the course of his studies, he met with a number of acclaimed Scottish authors and poets as well as being interviewed about his work on BBC Radio Scotland. He has also given a number of public lectures including, since 2009, an annual Christmas presentation at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
A member of the Royal Society of Literature, Tom has written five books on the subject of modern film including John Hughes and Eighties Cinema (reprinted in three editions) and last year’s The Christmas Movie Book, an analysis of more than six decades of festive cinema.
