Want your gifts to look as dazzling as the tree they’re under? Here’s how to have Christmas all wrapped up.

Traipsing round the crowded shops then lugging home your bags is only half of the job – next you have to tackle the wrapping!

For many people, this is a dreaded chore and something best done as rapidly as possible.

But a beautifully-wrapped gift can actually be part of the pleasure of Christmas.

“Just imagine the person’s face lighting up when you give them the gift,” says Julie Domican, who works in visual merchandising at John Lewis.

Selected John Lewis stores around the UK offer professional wrapping services, for gifts purchased in store, which will be flooded with business during the festive period.

“It’s a real mix of people who use the wrapping service,” says Domican. “Men, women, all ages, often people who simply don’t have time to wrap something themselves but want it to look special.”

With a little time and creativity, it’s possible to achieve an expert-quality finish at home, too.

Domican suggests making the wrapping itself a bit of an event, so that it doesn’t feel like a dreaded chore.

“If you’ve got a big pile of presents to get through, spread the wrapping up over a few nights,” she says. “Put on a CD and make it enjoyable. You can get the family involved or get friends round and make an evening of it – so long as people aren’t wrapping up their own gifts!”

GETTING STARTED

First, you need to shop for your supplies.

“Choose your paper and your ribbons etc,” says Domican. “Make sure everything matches nicely, or if you want to go for multiple colours, make sure they go well together.”

You’ll also need a suitable pair of scissors, and a clear, solid surface to work on. A table is ideal, or you may prefer to sit on the floor. It may be a good idea to lay a protective sheet to avoid scraping precious surfaces.

Domican recommends using double-sided tape, for a really professional finish – as the tape won’t be visible on the outside.

Failing that, tape that comes in a dispenser will make the job a lot easier than having to snip off pieces of sticky-tape as you go.

TUCK AND TRIM

To work out how much paper you need per item, Domican says the general rule is to place the gift on the paper – with enough paper on all sides to fold over the top, and overlap by at least an inch.

“After folding one side of the paper over, if you’re using double-sided tape you’ll then be able to place the tape along the outside edge of the paper, and fold the other side of the paper over the top and stick it down,” she says.

To tape down the remaining paper at the top and bottom, start by gently pushing the paper down onto the gift (the side with the taped seam), then fold the two sides next to it down, trimming and tucking any stray edges until you have a neat triangle which you can press down.

“Cylinders can be done in a similar way,” says Domican. “When wrapping awkward shapes, the best trick is to pop the gift into a box first, which you can then wrap, or buy a gift box and fill it with shredded tissue paper, or a nice gift bag.

“If you do want to wrap the gifts, choose a busy, patterned paper rather than a plain one. The pattern will distort over the awkward edges and they’ll look better.”

SPECIAL TOUCHES

Now for the fun part! Wrapping your gifts tidily is just part of the job – the finishing touches are what will make them look really special.

Even a simple ribbon or bow will look effective – or you can get even more creative and add little extras.

“To make presents extra special I put chocolates in little gift bags and attach them to the ribbon,” says Domican. “You can do the same with little trinkets, perhaps a little key-ring, just to add an extra, personal touch. Pretty baubles also work well – these will look good and form part of the gift.”

Making your presents look special doesn’t have to cost the earth, either.

“I used to collect pinecones from walks, and I’d glue a bit of glitter on them then attach them to my gifts as an added decoration,” says Domican. “It barely cost anything but looked very effective.”

How will the year ahead pan out? Find out in this annual round-up of astrological stars.

ARIES (March 21 – April 20)

Aries, you really will be springing into action as this year begins! Communications are buzzing and life runs fast, just as you like it. Although there is a strong emphasis on family and friends, this is a year for you to blossom personally. A steep learning curve at work brings satisfaction and leads the way to more cash. Although there are times of restlessness, this can be balanced with exercise and a good diet. Romance runs a thread through the whole year, bringing new influences and strengthening existing relationships. There is something about you that is fresh and inspiring. Partners see about you a kind of innocence that they want to protect. There is the need to jump into situations with both feet and heart, regardless of the cost. If your sense of adventure tempts you to take on too much, remember that it is a good idea to take a practical approach. Plan carefully to stay ahead of your personal needs. As the autumn comes there is something to learn from the past. Extra energy comes from living in the present but there is nothing wrong with slowing down from time to time. See where you are. Ask any questions about where you are going and then get on with life.

OVERALL: An exciting and passionate year in which you should aim to grow and nurture your talents.

TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)

A boost to finances early in the year gives a sense of optimism. Doors are open that would have been closed before. This period dwindles towards autumn so make the most of any opportunities to get a head start. Family and friends become especially important as you aim to include them more in your life. Those who value your friendship may have particular need of it in the months to come. Taking a practical approach and not overstretching your resources is the best approach. It is much easier to help others if you first consider yourself. Any insecurity will show itself by the tendency to hold on to things and people that no longer give real support, so be prepared to give some of these things to charity or take a step back from people who drain your spirit. Love and romance revolve mainly around established relationships or the beginnings of them as you are not in a flighty frame of mind this year. Long-term satisfaction is the aim and as close ties become closer, your peace of mind increases. Even so, your more adventurous side demands travel or changes that could be quite spontaneous. Perhaps that is just what you need to stimulate ideas and your imagination!

OVERALL: A time of personal growth and stability. Aim for what you need rather than what you desire.

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)

The year begins with a dynamic boost to optimism and prospects. Perhaps a change at work brings with it new opportunities or you decide on learning something new. Whatever it is, your brain buzzes with ideas through the spring. Make it a time when you take control of your money. Use it wisely and also save. Sometimes this is best done by simply spending less when tempted! Treat your health with respect and it will work well for you. Get any checks that are needed to keep on top form. People and communications bring the most happiness and satisfaction and the more you do for others, the more you will prosper in spirit. Looking for someone special? The summer brings the best chance. Meet like-minded individuals in unusual places. Although people come and go from your life, you enjoy the novelty. There is little you like more than constant mental stimulation and fresh physical company. You will probably use your media less for social contact, preferring the raw joy of live interactions. Approaching a flirtatious autumn, you need to seek out companions who are both intelligent and attractive and what speed does not bring to you, patience will. Discovering a new talent may surprise you, but it shouldn’t. You have still yet to use your full potential.

OVERALL: An inspiring and intelligent year and one in which you may find a new direction.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

This is a year of celebration and good fortune. Loveable people are often at your side as your enthusiasm for life attracts like-minded folk in droves. For this to take off, however, you must make an effort. Get out and keep talking as finding out about others gives you a wonderful insight into their feelings and needs. The summer brings a dynamic character into your life who may be a little bit demanding. Spend less time with them and more with your friends to keep a balance. Seek romance with a soft-centred individual. If you go for looks in a lover, it could bring disappointment. A good relationship needs effort. With a big emphasis on your personal life, business may just plod along. Perhaps you can involve your partner to bring up fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Likewise, a trip abroad fires up those little grey cells! One good idea is all you need to set the cash flowing. The autumn demands that you take care over legal matters and that you are sure to read that small print. Cash is not king but it helps life run smoothly.

OVERALL: A time to grow in stature and make wise decisions. These should be based on facts, not fantasy.

LEO (July 23 – August 23)

Seek out the wise and supportive this spring. Why bother with negative people and situations when you have the chance to bloom? Always aim to take the path of progress, especially in building good and long-term relationships. A soulmate is close so appreciate who and what you have. Those with an open mind will find opportunities. There is no need to compromise in this area and certainly don’t accept anything that is not in your best interests! Although day-to-day living is busy, especially in the summer, give yourself time for thought. Look at what you believe in and check that you are on the right path. Be yourself, especially around loved ones. Remember that important thoughts are there to be shared. Yes, really! The autumn brings changeable moods, but this is natural for your sign at this time. Again, share those hopes and dreams. Admit your disappointments. Being vulnerable at times only serves to make you more loveable, so go with it. Being supportive of others emotionally helps to redress any imbalance. See how appreciated you are and how much there is to look forward to. Planning travel with a loved one reminds you of unfulfilled ambitions. There is always time, you know.

OVERALL: A loving and supportive year. Satisfaction comes from those around you and their appreciation.

VIRGO (August 24 – September 23)

Both home and career are in the spotlight this year. Some opportunities will not come as easily for some time so make the most of what is on offer. Cash should flow more easily but make sure that it is mostly flowing in, not out! Look out for big promises that come to nothing. Your good judgment of character serves you well here! Talking of promises, those you make to yourself are very important, especially if they concern your health. Take care of what you have in any area that is essential. Romance is never far away but you will have to reach out for it. Make things happen rather than sit and wait in this area. Meetings through your work bring the most satisfaction when summer throws up someone on your wavelength. This person brings new energy and inspiration through example. There could also be some romance, even if it is fleeting. Enjoy! When thinking of travel, short breaks can be as enjoyable as long stretches away. There is no need to splash the cash if you can take a working holiday or do a house swap. Technicolor dreams bring flashes of inspiration during the autumn. Following the progress of a relative gives your imagination a boost.

OVERALL: A sparkling and thought-provoking year. Think where you want to be in five years’ time.

LIBRA (September 24 – October 23)

Home life and cash dominate the year. Getting organised is important, especially if you plan to travel. Indeed, travel in the spring is not only likely but desirable. It is a time to seek and find things out. Someone from another culture has knowledge that intrigues you. A hunger to learn by chance sees the opportunity for increased wealth. This will satisfy your need for the better things in life. Having said that, Libra, it is also a year in which you declutter. Spirituality becomes more important and having the time to appreciate nature. With a sharp mind and infinite curiosity, it is possible to really open up your life. You could be lucky and find love but it may be fleeting. Even so, every chance for happiness should be taken and enjoyed. Basking in someone else’s glory in the autumn sparks some ambitions of your own. At this time working with a partner seems the best option, especially financially. Check the small print in any agreements and then get on with it. Keeping up with digital media brings an opportunity to use your artistic skills and to develop them further. Your most important communications should be face to face rather than through media – much more effective emotionally.

OVERALL: A time to enjoy moving ahead and leaving behind what is outmoded and ineffectual.

SCORPIO (October 24 – November 22)

Be lucky as the year begins and through the spring. Use your enthusiasm to make the most of opportunities and show others that you are serious. Chances come your way that seem charmed, but they are real and need to be made the most of! As money comes in, try to hold on to some of it as the temptation to spend will be strong. Finding a new position on the work front, maybe even in an existing company, brings changes. These may at first seem a step back but give it time. Sometimes going in a different direction fires the imagination and sense of purpose. Aim to be more flexible in all areas to sidetrack stress and avoid burning yourself out intellectually by working with others. Take note of their needs but avoid getting into a ‘tug of war’ situation. You do not need so much to control your emotions as to channel them. Friendships have the best chance to develop if you give them a chance. Being overly attracted by appearance can be a mistake. Go, instead, for those who have bothered to develop their personalities and have fun! Work is not the be all and end all. Rediscover a sense of fun by being in younger company and letting your hair down. Love your life!

OVERALL: A sparky and spiky time ahead. Would you have it any other way?

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 – December 21)

Embrace life, love and new friends this year! Romance is more likely if you resist having preconceived ideas. When going out to learn something new, perhaps at a course, develop friendships. If these are with much younger and much older people, so much the better! Get to know others in a targeted and even intense way. This approach brings you understanding that has perhaps been lacking in the past. People are not things that happen to you, they are influences that you can control. Take charge with forward planning and charm. Who could resist your smile? Be serious about work and money. You cannot afford to play fast and loose with your responsibilities! Keeping spending under control brings satisfaction. A sense of your own worth comes from realising your talents and developing them. With the emphasis on home through summer and autumn, you get an amazing amount done. When reading about people and subjects that interest you, inspiration can strike. Use it, develop it and have fun with it. This winter, wisdom comes through play. The outdoors is attractive, especially when in loving company. A social group may seem tame now but it brings a kind of stability.

OVERALL: You are on a journey to discover yourself. Often this is seen through the eyes of others.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 20)

Amazingly close relationships with loved ones spin delight right through this year. Close to home is where your heart is. Even those who still seek love feel comfortable and have moments of great content. Making your life in your own image is the aim. You know what you want and need to aim high, but if you fall a little short, you should still be happy with the result! Ambition takes a back seat to a need for peace of mind, as it should. When it comes to career moves, what you want may not be what you need for happiness so allow yourself some flexibility. Let your lighter side enjoy the summer and autumn. Young people give a fresh perspective, a new way of looking at life and a happy heart is soon full of delight! Friends will notice another side of you come winter. This is when you seek to bring out the more spiritual and artistic side of your character. These are areas that are normally given secondary consideration. Right now, though, there is a desire to seek new ways to live your life. Of course you still have strong ambitions but they are becoming more balanced with home life.

OVERALL: A time to take charge of your own wellbeing and be honest with yourself about your needs.

AQUARIUS (January 21 – February 19)

A good, well-balanced year ahead gives you plenty of time to relax. Aquarians can have their fill of love and learn to enjoy different aspects of romance. A jovial and happy soul is very attractive, especially to those seeking someone special. Don’t expect all encounters to be lasting, however. You are being encouraged to find your happiness through being open-minded and adventurous. Existing relationships strengthen as you find your way forward emotionally. Keep a balance between work and leisure in the second half of the year with the emphasis on communications with colleagues. There may be some bumpy times here that you can smooth over with a calm approach. When life gets busy, resist the urge to cut corners either at work or home. Words are cheap but the wrong ones this winter could see you in hot water. Be discreet and if you are unsure of a situation, investigate. If you are expecting a change or promotion at work, be patient. Maybe the time is not right in financial terms for your boss, so don’t take it to heart. Instead, plan to make moves to learn more about your job and how technology can help and bring your ideas to the attention of someone in charge. There is much to gain by being one step ahead.

OVERALL: It is a year to be open-minded and experimental. What you learn is very valuable.

PISCES (February 20 – March 20)

It is a big year for learning new things, and this applies as much to people as work. Gaining knowledge in both areas brings chances to get ahead. Keep an open mind and constantly look for opportunities. Home life is important and you are urged to consider at length any move or agreement. Act rashly and you could regret it. It is not all sober thought, however. The summer encourages you to get out and play, exploring new things and people. A hobby can bring passionate contact but don’t necessarily expect new love to last forever. Enjoy each moment for its own worth. Make this a year of realising more of your potential. There are many talents to develop and many lives to touch. Some form of voluntary or community work is on offer in the autumn. Don’t dismiss it out of hand. Give it a try. Normally you don’t have much time to study how people ‘tick’. Well, this could be your chance to learn something about human nature (including your own!) Cash flow can be erratic but you are still looking for that long-term security. Some ‘quick fixes’ may be necessary but should not be considered an answer. When seeking out big household items, look for bargains. Make being thrifty a choice, not just a necessity.

OVERALL: A year in which you grow emotionally and expand intellectually. Read, learn and act.

Serving a fabulous festive feast doesn’t have to be a stressful affair. Master chef Neil Armstrong is running Christmas workshops at the London culinary school Le Cordon Bleu. Diana Pilkington hears his top tips on how to plan and prep like a pro

A FEW WEEKS TO GO…

Never underestimate the importance of good planning. This is the time to gather your preferred recipes, work out how many people will be eating, make the necessary multiplication and write your ingredients list. Armstrong is always surprised that people leave it to the last minute to work out how much food they need for each person. He says: “It’s amazing how many people would do it in a more ad hoc way, as they are getting the meal together in the kitchen, but it’s something to do at the first step.”

When writing a shopping list, split it into separate headings for each category, such as meat products, fish and beverages. “This saves you a huge amount of time,” Armstrong says.

Place your orders in good time. This could mean phoning local suppliers like a butcher or, if you’re a super-planner, placing your order online with a retailer such as Ocado. “The great thing about online ordering is that you can book your delivery slot and change the order around before the day. But slots go quickly at Christmas so you have to act quickly.”

Take a leaf out of a professional chef’s book and make a list of any equipment you’ll need on the big day that’s specific to your recipes. Armstrong says: “You don’t want to get to the day and suddenly find you don’t have the right size tin foil or oven dish.”

When choosing recipes, keep it simple and cook within your knowledge. If you do want to try something new, practise the recipe in advance so it goes smoothly on the day. Picking a cold starter, such as game terrine or gravlax, is a good option as you can plate it up, put it on the table and get back to cooking. “Christmas is about people getting together so the standard of cooking shouldn’t be that of a three-star Michelin restaurant,” the chef says.

A WEEK TO GO…

People often get tripped up by the size of their fridge at Christmas time, so clear some space for all your festive fare. Alcohol can be kept out of the fridge and cooled nearer the time.

With your orders already placed, the actual buying or delivery of ingredients can usually be completed by two days before the big day. “Unless you choose something really fragile for your starter, all the main things like turkey, sprouts and chipolatas can be stored for two or three days,” Armstrong says.

Don’t be afraid to buy ready-made elements of the meal. After all, a proper homemade Christmas pudding needs to be made weeks in advance. Armstrong says: “The centrepiece of your meal is the bird with all the trimmings, so if you focus on that you can do something super simple or even pre-made for the first and last course.”

ONE DAY TO GO…

You can get the meal oven-ready on Christmas Eve so that Christmas Day is as stress-free as possible. Make sure your turkey is trussed and stuffed and, to save time, you can peel your garlic and veg too, but make sure you store peeled potatoes in water.

Salad can be picked and washed in advance and the dressing prepared. Prepare cold starters and desserts, too.

Accompaniments, such as cranberry sauce or jellies, can be made on Christmas Eve as well. Armstrong adds: “Bread sauce should be made on the day you’re using it, but you can get the breadcrumbs weighed up and have the ingredients ready the day before.”

If you’re using an Aga, you can begin cooking your bird in the top left-hand oven on the night of Christmas Eve so it just needs to be finished off on Christmas day.

ON THE DAY…

Whether you’re having goose or turkey, prioritise your bird and work out when it needs to go in the oven. Cooking times vary according to size but, as a rough guide, allow 20 minutes per pound, plus an extra 20 minutes overall. Once cooked, cover and allow to rest before you serve it. Armstrong says: “I’d recommend starting on a hot temperature of around 200C. Cook it initially for about half an hour, by which point the bird will be brown but uncooked. Then turn the oven down and cook through [for the relevant time]. Make sure you’ve done the calculation in advance.”

Roast potatoes are next on the list of priorities as they often take longer than expected. “As people only tend to have one oven, it can get very moist and you find you can’t do the bird and roasties at the same time,” Armstrong says. “But the great thing about roast potatoes is you can cook them off on the day, and then heat them back through before serving.”

When the bird is resting, it’s a good time to make a sauce in the pan, and get your veggies on the go last. Armstrong adds: “Be careful not to overcrowd your oven or it won’t work as well. Be realistic, and if you can’t do roast parsnips, for example, make a parsnip puree.”

You can make the meal as complex as you like, throwing in nibbles and canapes, but Armstrong reckons less is more. “Once your guests get stuck into the booze and you know you’ve got a huge meal ahead, it’s best to make it nice and light so people will really enjoy what they eat at the table.”

TIPS FROM THE TOP

Fellow chefs share their handiest festive hints…

James Martin: “All the boiled veg can be cooked the night before. Once cooked, drain the vegetables and put them ice cold water, then drain them off, put them in a tray and place it in the fridge. When you want to use them, put the vegetables in a pan and pour a kettle full of water over the top. Leave it for one minute and then drain the veg off down the sink. It gives you perfectly cooked veg!”

Michel Roux: “Christmas should be a family gathering and everyone has to chip in. Find out who wants to do what and get people to do what they love. And don’t overdo the meal – do one course very well and, if needed, buy a bit of food prepared by other people.”

Michel Roux: The Collection is published by Quadrille, £25.

Nigel Slater: “Find a recipe that is ‘cut and come again’. It can be a pate, a pie or a pudding – anything you can make one day and serve the next. That way, you’ve got something tucked away and you don’t have to start cooking immediately when you wake up. And if anyone rings the doorbell you’ve got something for them.”

Nigel Slater’s The Kitchen Diaries II is published by Fourth Estate, priced £30.

Clarissa Dickson Wright: “Christmas dinner is actually the easiest and most predictable meal in the world. Keep it to what people can reasonably eat and stay sober until it’s put on the table. The problem is people start drinking too early and get in a muddle and that’s when things go wrong.”

Jo Wheatley, 2011 winner of The Great British Bake Off: “When I’ve got spare time, I make packs of different types of pastry and pop them in the freezer with labels. When you want to make mince pies, you can get the pastry out the night before, make a batch in the morning and you can freeze them again after baking. You don’t have to make everything in one go.”

Christmas is a time of joy, but it can also be a huge source of more»

Christmas is a time of joy, but it can also be a huge source of stress for many – especially if your family doesn’t fit the ‘traditional’ 2.4 children mould. Psychologist Cary Cooper shares his advice for keeping festive fall-outs to a minimum.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – at least it is according to the popular song!

Christmas is a time for families to re-connect and come together, but while this can be merry and joyous, the festivities can also lead to a lot of tension for many families and feuds can flare up.

Keeping everybody happy can be challenging, and things get even trickier if your family has a complicated or sensitive set-up.

If you’re divorced and share custody of the children, or have a step family and two sets of in-laws, navigating the arrangements for the festive celebrations can pose an emotional minefield.

Psychologist Professor Cary Cooper is head of relationship counselling charity Relate and a panel member for the Centre for the Modern Family, which aims to improve understanding of families in the 21st century. Cooper points out that only 16% of modern day families in the UK fit the traditional model, defined as two married parents living together with two or more children.

Having wed twice himself, with two children from each marriage, Cooper has first-hand experience of tackling complicated family arrangements, but he’s confident that steps can be taken to keep stress to a minimum.

WHY THE STRESS?

According to Cooper, Christmas is stressful because, often, it is one of only two times of the year that the family has to reintegrate emotionally for a substantial period of time. During the rest of the year, family members are only “tactically” connecting. “A characteristic of the modern family – traditional or otherwise – is they lead a very diverse life and only come together for a longish period of time over Christmas and family holidays.

“At Christmas, you’re having to reintegrate with, say, your teenage kids, who during a normal week you’re just doing tactical behaviour with: ‘Who’s picking you up?’, ‘Did you do your homework?’, ‘You’re not listening very much; you’re not talking very much’.

“Now, you’re dumped in a box for 10 days, and that process of reintegrating is stressful because you’re having to tolerate everybody else, whereas before you could just do your own thing.”

With this in mind, it’s no wonder spending more than a couple of days cooped up together can become intense. This is normal even when everybody gets on well. Throw tricky relationships into the mix, and tensions can rise even more.

For step families still in the early phase, adjusting to the new dynamics can take time, and members may barely know each other, let alone like each other.

This can be a big source of anxiety or tension, and things may feel even more sensitive at a time like Christmas – for both children and adults. Both may feel the pressure to ensure everybody’s happy, and there may be feeling of guilt and sadness, from both sides, for the parent who misses out.

PLAN AHEAD

Even the most ‘perfect’ of families will experience some degree of tension (or at least need a little breather every now and then!) at extended gathering like Christmas, so first and foremost, don’t be too hard on yourself and accept that it’s normal to experience teething problems.

However, there are steps you can take to help keep festive feuds low and festive fun high, and planning ahead is a good place to start.

“Planning has to be early,” says Cooper. “Plan the presents, who you’re going to see and when. Particularly in a modern family with all the step kids and the shared custody, it causes a lot of conflict to do it two weeks before Christmas.”

If planning involves interacting with an ex-partner with whom you’re not on the best of terms, Cooper is adamant that calling rather than emailing or texting is the safer option.

“In an email – you just make one mistake and use a particular word and you could get into real trouble,” he advises. “I would call them up, and when you call, be very, very patient and careful about what you say.”

He also suggests enlisting the help of the grandparents, if communication is particularly fraught: “The grandparents frequently have a better relationship with your ex than you do. They have to ensure good relations as otherwise they may not get access to their grandchildren.”

CREATE UNITY

Togetherness doesn’t just happen spontaneously – instead see it as something you can help create.

“If you want the family to be together with the minimal amount of tension, get them to do something as a unit,” says Cooper. “A good way of doing that is actually getting everyone involved in family games. Families who play games seem to integrate quicker than the ones that don’t.”

Another idea is to get the whole family involved in preparing the Christmas meal. For example, ask the kids to set the table, and the mothers-in-law to chop the vegetables: “It’s a way of communicating, it’s a way of getting everyone engaged,” explains Cooper.

Delegating different parts of the preparation could even extend to sharing the cost of provisions, which may help alleviate stress and resentment, and – again – help create unity. “The more you feel you’re part of something, rather than a guest, the better it is,” says Cooper.

He believes it’s a good idea to plan an itinerary for Christmas Day, with lots of activities that will get the whole family engaged and communicating well, and a walk after the big meal is a great way to relieve cabin fever.

BE FAIR

If you are fretting about Christmas, or end up seething on the day, remember that you’re probably not the only one. Every member of the family is likely to be dealing with their own niggles, which is especially important to remember when you have a new step family.

While planning the day and the activities, show consideration for others’ needs, and allow them to make suggestions too, should they want to. Perhaps they feel Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a fun round of charades, or maybe they have a breakfast custom they’d love to be incorporated.

With this in mind, try to be patient and be understanding of how the festive period may be stressful for everybody concerned. Your step children may want time to phone other relatives at various points during the day – always be supportive and encouraging.

As well as unity, equality is crucial – and one main example of this is with present buying.

With an expansive family, presents can cause huge financial strain, but according to Cooper, it’s less about cost and more about equality: “The more important part is whether there’s a difference between the presents. If I bought my son a season ticket to Manchester City, and bought my stepson a CD, there might be a problem. And sometimes you might buy your stepson something more expensive than your son as a way of compensating.”

Cooper suggests that the whole family agrees on a maximum price per present, to prevent such discrepancies occurring.

EMBRACE THE JOY!

On a final positive note, Cooper urges families to embrace their diversity. With a heartening 55% of those surveyed by the Centre for Modern Families wishing they could spend more time with their family, he believes that Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year: “There’s a lot of stress when families meet, no question about it. But if it’s managed properly and there’s not too much hostility, they’ll start enjoying being in this extended family.”

More than 80,000 people are treated for Yueltide-induced injuries each year according to the NHS, not to mention the sore heads and indigestion that’ll be sweeping the nation. Avoid a trip to A&E by watching out for these 10 common Christmas threats.

KITCHEN NIGHTMARES

With the Christmas meal usually involving several saucepans simultaneously bubbling away, a sweltering packed oven, and a marathon of chopping, slicing and carving, it’s no surprise the kitchen’s where most festive injuries happen.

Avoid a cooking catastrophe by making sure anyone not involved stays out of the way, and wipe spillages as soon as they happen.

Take your time and take care! When chopping, the hand holding the vegetable should be in a claw shape to protect your fingertips, and secure meat with a fork so it doesn’t slip as you’re carving.

If you suffer a minor burn, immediately hold it under cold running water for at least 10 minutes, then wrap in cling film to avoid infection. To stop bleeding from a cut finger, raise it above your head.

NOT SO GLORIOUS FOOD

Festive fun will quickly fester if the whole family comes down with food poisoning, which not only causes major discomfort but can be fatal. Nowadays, most people are aware of the importance of washing their hands after handling raw meat, especially poultry. However, it’s not necessary to wash the meat itself, as water that sprays off can spread bacteria. The key is to make sure the turkey or chicken is cooked through.

Follow instructions and always check it’s ready by piercing the bird where the thigh meets the breast – its thickest area. The juices that run out should be clear, not pink. Keep raw and cooked foods well apart, to avoid cross contamination.

OH CHRISTMAS TREE!

For many, Christmas isn’t complete without a real tree. But take care that any allergies or asthma in your loved ones are not exacerbated by mould spores carried by the trussed up conifer.

Moreover, around 1,000 people are injured annually by their tree. When decorating it, or reaching for presents underneath, watch out for branches – the needles can cause nasty eye injuries. When reaching to the top of a tall tree, stand on a sturdy chair or stepladder and ask somebody to hold it steady.

Take care also to stand the tree securely, and position it in an area where it’s least likely to be knocked or tripped over.

LIGHT UP SAFELY

Candles and fairy lights may look dazzling, but they can also be a fire hazard – especially with all that flammable tinsel and wrapping paper around. If you choose an artificial tree, make sure it’s fire-resistant, and ensure your tree’s kept a safe distance from the fireplace, electric heater or any open flames.

Fairy lights which are faulty or in bad condition can be a major cause of injury, including electrocution. Make sure yours comply with EU safety regulations, and when getting last year’s lights out, inspect them carefully before plugging them in, to ensure the wires are intact and haven’t frayed or been chewed by a mouse! Crucially, always remember to switch lights off and put out candles before going to bed.

BELLY ACHE AND BEYOND

Christmas Day largely revolves around food, and with so many treats on offer it’s easy to stuff yourself silly. Indeed, many of us consume up to triple the usual daily calorie intake on December 25.

While a slight tummy ache may seem a small price to pay, severe indigestion can be painful and alarming. In the long run, there’s the added inches to your waistline and all that extra fat and cholesterol to consider, too.

For a healthier lunch, rack up the green veg and reduce the number of roasties on each plate. Be wary of how much fatty butter and salt you’re adding to each dish and, instead of just crisps and chocolate, make sure there are healthy snacks on offer such as nuts and fruit. It’s also great to plan an activity that will burn calories, such as a walk, or even a game of charades.

BOOZE BOTHER

What with all the work parties and get-togethers with friends, it’s easy to drink more than usual over the festive season. Alcohol doesn’t just wreak havoc with our bodies, it can also make accidents more likely. Have fun but be cautious – on a big night out, alternate with water or soft drinks and arrange safe transport home in advance.

On Christmas Day, don’t get too tipsy if you’re cooking the dinner – hot stoves, knives and booze are a dangerous combination. Watch out also for injuries from flying corks when opening champagne.

SEASONAL STRESS

There’s a lot of pressure at Christmas – to be out having lots of fun, keeping difficult relatives happy, draining bank accounts to buy presents. No wonder it can become overwhelming.

Help yourself by focusing on what you do have, rather than what you don’t, or what you can’t afford. If getting through a family Christmas is a concern, plan an active itinerary, with walks and games, to reduce the potential for conflict. If possible, an activity alone, such as a relaxing bath, will do wonders.

Lessen money woes by agreeing on a budget per person for presents, as well as sharing the cost of food. Allocating tasks, so that the preparation and the epic post-dinner clean up is shared will also help.

BLUE CHRISTMAS

Christmas can be an extremely lonely or isolating time for many people, especially the elderly who live alone. It can also be a time when the loss of a loved one feels even more poignant.

If you’re worried about somebody being lonely, think of ways you could help – if inviting them round for dinner isn’t quite an option, perhaps a drink and a walk? Exercise, and fresh air, is fantastic for boosting spirits.

If you are lonely, try to do as many activities as possible; get out if you can, speak to friends, even read a book or watch a movie. You might also consider volunteering at a charity, which will increase your interaction with others and help others.

KIDS AND ANIMALS

Dangling baubles, flashing fairy lights, glittering tinsel… Just a few of the many things that can be extremely enticing to little paws and hands at Christmas – and dangerous, too. Many tree ornaments are fragile and can easily smash. Also, pets and toddlers are both fond of shoving hazardous objects into their mouths, which can result in intestinal damage for cats and dogs and choking for tots. Be careful of small parts in presents and toys, too, and NEVER leave candles or bubbling pans unattended when there are children and pets around – serious accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Getting outside is great for body and mind – but nothing will curb the festive fun quicker than a trip to A&E.

Even if it hasn’t snowed, the ground may be covered by frost and slippery ice that can lead to twisted ankles or broken bones. Check weather reports before your Christmas walk and dress appropriately – sensible, grippy shoes and wrap up warm. Tread carefully and keep an eye on the ground.

For safe sledging, choose hills that end in a large, open space – nowhere that will send you careering into a street or fence.

Frozen ponds and rivers may look pretty, but the ice is probably thinner than you think and falling in may result in deadly hyperthermia – best admired from the banks instead.

There’s nothing like a cheesy festive love song to make you pine for a partner, but singleton Emily Taylor says you should embrace being alone this Christmas

“You do know there are services for people like you?” my mother casually asked.

“Excuse me?” I quizzed.

“You know, on the internet. You can meet people.”

As the penny dropped, my cheeks flushed.

“Mum!” I exclaimed. “For goodness sake!”

At 29, and single at Christmas for the umpteenth year, I knew the customary awkward questions (‘So have you had any dates this year?’) as much as I could guarantee the lumps in Mum’s gravy. But this was a record – my parents had only just picked me up from the train station. First time they’d seen me in six months, we’d been in the car less than 10 minutes…

“It’s OK, there’s no shame in it these days, you can find whoever you want on there,” Mum breezily explained. “Why don’t you go out with a lawyer or a banker?”

Of course there’s no shame in internet dating – thanks Mum! “That’s not why I’m shocked,” I started to explain. But, what was the point?

Reach a certain age, and if you’re not happily co-habiting/engaged/married or romantically-active in some form or other, then it’s going to be an issue – and never more so than at Christmas.

After all, the festive season was made for couples – or so it can bloomin’ seem…

First, the adverts start on TV, which appear to have two aims: to compel smug couples to buy stuff for each other, and to make single folk cry. That’s right – Labradors and children are very cute when they’re frolicking in the snow or hanging up their stockings in the wonderful living room of their wonderful home – better get my skates on and find a boyfriend eh, or might be too late for me! And no – there isn’t an adorably-clueless man making a last-minute dash around the jewellery department for me – thanks for the reminder!

The ads depicting singles are even worse. A far-too-calm supermodel gets spruced up for a night out, then glides out of a taxi into a party where some handsome stranger, mistletoe at the ready, instantly clocks her and winks suggestively.

What the hell’s that all about!? Some sort of in-joke I’m missing? Everybody knows the line between being romantically-hopeful and downright desperate is never so fine as during the festive season. If you do get lucky, it probably means you ended up snogging the idiot from IT at your work party, but more likely you go home alone feeling even more HOPELESSLY UN-LOVED than ever.

More importantly, who has the money for all these new sparkly party frocks? I’m lucky if I can afford a mince pie by the time I’ve bought presents for everybody else’s kids and partners.

It’s fine. I actually quite enjoy watching my little sister and her husband exchange their never-ending stack of gifts on Christmas morning. Sure. And after a few mulled wines, facing Aunt Batty’s interrogation at lunch about my worrying lack of suitors will be a walk in the park.

I’ve more pressing matters to focus on – like getting through the evening of movies without starting to sob and wail – “I know how Rudolph feels, an outcast, WAHHHH!”

But, when tensions with in-laws start rising, or the kids start bickering, I’ll savour my moment of smugness and sneak off and leave them to it. (Come on, let me have this one!)

It’s easy to think the grass is always greener, but Christmas can be stressful for couples too. At least you don’t have to worry about pleasing two sets of in-laws for the time-being! Make the most of this and embrace the chance to do things all on your terms.

GIVE MISTLETOE A MISS

Who doesn’t want a cheeky kiss at Christmas? But if you’ve been single for a while the pressure to find romance can be immense at this time of year, which can leave you more deflated than ever if things don’t work out. Make the choice to forget about love this year and just enjoy yourself and spending time with family and friends.

TREAT YOURSELF

No special someone to exchange gifts with? Heck – by yourself that necklace, perfume or those gorgeous shoes. Think of all the money you’ve saved by not having to buy presents for your other half.

IN GOOD COMPANY

It may feel like it, but you are not the only person who’s single at Christmas. Make plans to catch up with a fellow singleton and go on a ‘date’ to watch that new movie together. If all your friends are loved-up, why not check out clubs and social groups in your area or look at volunteering opportunities. Anything’s better than moping alone and it could be really rewarding.

BE PREPARED

If you’re already dreading having to explain why you’re still single, or reassure ‘concerned’ relatives that you’re fine, just prepare a breezy response then laugh it off and forget about it.

LOOK AHEAD

Rather than feeling miserable about the things you don’t have, focus on what you could have – all because you’re single! This freedom won’t last forever, so make a list of things you’d love to do in 2013, whether that’s visiting tea shops on the coast, learning a language or travelling – absolutely anything.

Create a Christmas table setting that will win as many compliments as the festive meal, says Gabrielle Fagan.

REVEL IN RED

Take inspiration from Scandinavians for a look that brilliantly blends simplicity with style. “Red brings warmth and a traditional glow to a table,” says Kate Dyson, owner of The Dining Room Shop.

“My suggestion would be red napkins, a matching runner and red goblets. A low, clear glass bowl vase – or one in silvery mercury glass – filled with red roses encircled by a red berry wreath makes a wonderful centrepiece.

“Always add finishing touches such as small bud vases with white or red single blooms or miniature presents beside each plate. You could also tie on to the back of each chair, with red ribbon, a small cluster of red baubles and a white label bearing each guest’s name.”

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Choose gold to create an opulent table setting with plenty of wow factor.

“Gold is always synonymous with luxury, and it can be interpreted in two ways,” says Clare Harris, founder of Talking Tables, specialists in party and table accessories.

“Either take a traditional approach by using darker antique shades of gold, or give it a contemporary spin by using sleek, gilded, modern table accessories that will look dazzling and be bang on-trend.

“Start with a white table cover base, but layer on gold charger plates, gold crackers, gold napkin; gold table gems, gold candles and gold table garlands. Never be afraid of adding opulence and glamour to a Christmas table. This is a place you want guests to linger and relax long after the meal is over.”

WHITE WONDERLAND

Conjure a classic snowy white setting for a serene, tranquil table, and perfectly showcase the lavish feast.

“A winter wonderland look for a table never fails to draw compliments as it is delightfully easy-on-the-eye, and such a calming contrast to all the colour and detail of the festive decorations,” says Sylvia Oakley, tableware stylist for Villeroy & Boch.

“A crisp white tablecloth, napkins, white tableware and candles are, of course, the main ingredients, but just as essential are elements of the natural world, from pine cones to sprigs of ivy, and a tiny bunch of mistletoe tied with a white velvet ribbon to each napkin.”

SHIMMERING SILVER

Create a frosty table with an elegant silver theme to add sparkle and drama to a setting.

“Magical settings with an element of glitter and glitz are one of the strongest trends this season,” says Anne Singer, owner of the Monogrammed Linen Shop.

“Silver plated candlesticks, silver charger plates and cutlery or napkins tied with silver ribbon always give a celebratory feel to a table.

“Make a focal point of a crystal bowl filled with silver baubles, use foliage sprayed silver to go down the centre of the table and entwine it around place settings, then scatter silver sequins.”
